In this article, we will learn how to install the new plugin in your WordPress website. There are 2 ways to install the new plugin. We’ll begin with simpler and easier one.
Install Plugin directly from WordPress plugin repository
Go to WordPress dashboard. Click Plugin > ‘Add New’ menu.
You’ll see Add Plugin page. In the search box, enter the name or keyword of the plugin you want to install. Find the right plugin and click ‘Install Now’ button.
The plugin gets installed and you’ll see ‘Activate’ button in the place of ‘Install Now’ button. Click Activate button if you want to activate this plugin immediately. (You can activate or deactivate plugin later on from Plugin page as well.)
Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed the new plugin.
Install plugin by uploading it from your computer
There may be the case when you’ve to use plugin outside WordPress plugin repository. Or you may even want to upload and install the plugin that you downloaded from WordPress plugin repository. Now, let’s learn how to do it.
There are two ways to upload and install the new plugin:
- uploading plugin from WordPress dashboard and
- uploading plugin using FTP.
Upload plugin from WordPress dashboard
Go to WordPress dashboard and click Plugin > Add New menu
You’ll see Add Plugin page. Click Upload Plugin button.
You will see the following screen. Click ‘Choose File’ button and select the plugin you want to upload from your computer. Click Install Now button.
Your theme gets uploaded to the server and gets installed as shown below. Now, you can click Activate Plugin button to activate this plugin immediately. (You can choose to activate or deactivate the installed plugins from the Plugin page.)
You’ve successfully uploaded and installed the new plugin.
Manually upload and install plugin using FTP
You can upload the plugin manually using FTP as well. For this you need:
- FTP credentials
- FTP client
- WordPress plugin that you’ve downloaded and want to upload
Before you start, extract the zipped plugin folder.
Open your FTP client and connect the server with FTP credentials. You need to locate to wp-content > plugins directory in your server
Now, drag the plugin folder in the local site to the plugins directory of the remote site. Wait until all the files are successfully uploaded.
After the successful completion of uploading process in FTP client, go to WordPress dashboard. Click Plugin menu to open Plugins page. Locate the plugin that you uploaded. Click Activate button to active it.
You’ve successfully uploaded and installed the new plugin using FTP.
